Kamakura

monday was "Ocean Day" in japan, a newly established national holiday, which meant NO WORK!!

so to celebrate this outstanding holiday, we decided to take a day trip to Kamakura, which is about an hour south of Tokyo.

for all my fellow Texans (and Longhorns in particular), look what i spied at our train station.

yeahhhhh!!! =)

after 1.5 hours on a train, we arrived in Katase-Enoshima

our first stop - the Enoshima-jinja Shrine

imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

a view from the top of the shrine. i spy mountains and beaches in the distance!

melanie, enjoying the view

ok, so the ACTUAL reason we went to Kamakura was to go to the beach ... i mean, as well as fulfill our thirst for historical monuments and ancient Zen temples and shrines.

there were several beaches to choose from, but we ended up at Yuigahama Beach. the beach was ok ... so the sand WASN'T white and powdery ... and the water WASN'T blue ... or clear, for that matter. but it was a beach! i know my Californian friends were suffering from beach-withdrawal.

me and mel

so after the beach, we headed up to Kotokuin Temple, home of the Daibutsu, the Great Buddha. he is made of bronze, is 11.35 meters tall, and was built in 1252. he's the 2nd largest Buddha statue in Japan (the largest is in Nara).

for 200 yen (less than 20 cents), you can go inside of him!

i have big feet, but my sandals were no match for Daibutsu's.

on a side note, shoes here in japan come in 4 sizes: S, M, L, and sometimes LL.

i wear L. =(

(my feet aren't even THAT big! they have midget feet here!)

and a final word of wisdom

WHEN YOU GO TO DRIVE SHORTLY DON'T SAY THAT IT DOES NOT BECOME A MISSING CHILD.

ok?

thanks =) i can't take all the credit - 6 weeks of walking about a mile a day to and from bus stations does wonders! i'm going to miss it once i get back to the states ... as i drive around in my car and get fat.

Hey! The Odakyu line to Enoshima! I took that line everyday between Shinjuku and Ebina for a week. I hate that line cuz of the rush-hour and shuuden traffic every day....it's like being packed into a sardine can of pushy businessmen.

Kamakura looks like a culturally-rich village. Looks like you were you able to fend off thieves with your straw-mat "sword".

yep - lots of zen temples and shrines. it's supposed to the the "Kyoto of East Japan" or something like that.

yes, my sword came in handy, especially on the crowded subway. =)

I'm jealous. I wish I were in Japan travelling around. Are you working out there too or just on a long vacation? If you get a chance to visit the Palace in downtown Toyko take some pictures and share. They were closed when I went years back.

i'm doing study abroad in tokyo so i've been taking classes and doing an internship at a japanese law firm.

i opted out of visiting the palace, but i think some of my friends went. i'll see if i can steal some pics.
